What Are The ATC Seneca Awards™?
The Audio Theatre Central Seneca Awards™ is an annual awards show to recognize excellence in the world of family-friendly audio drama. The award year coincides with the calendar year and nominees are announced at least 30 days prior to the awards program. The Senecas are awarded by a committee comprised of industry critics. The awards are presented by the hosts of the Audio Theatre Central podcast and are owned by Porchlight Family Media.
What is Audio Drama?
Also called radio drama, radio theatre, or audio theatre, our definition of this audible medium is: a dramatized audio production consisting of a full cast of actors performing a story accompanied by sound design and music to create an immersive aural experience. Full-cast audiobooks and one-voice spoken word performances are not included in our definition. Productions may be highly-produced with custom foley and a detailed soundscape or they may be recorded live with minimal sound effects. As long as the essential elements of acting and sound design are present we consider it to be audio drama.
Why Seneca? The ATC Seneca Awards™ are named after Lucius Annaeus Seneca, also known as Seneca The Younger, the Roman dramatist and "father" of radio drama.
"Seneca has been claimed as a forerunner of radio drama because his plays were performed by readers as sound plays, not by actors as stage plays; but in this respect Seneca had no significant successors until 20th-century technology made possible the widespread dissemination of sound plays." - Excerpt from History of the Theatre |
